Competition format: In individual events – maximum of 2 swimmers per country and per event (provided they both achieved A time in that event), preliminaries, semi-finals (best 16, for 50m, 100m and 200m events) and finals (best 8); in relay events – 16 relays (maximum one relay per country), preliminaries and finals (best 8)

Competition results
: Swimming being a “timing” discipline, the rankings are ordered by the fastest times at the end of each race. Qualification for semi-finals are based on the 16 fastest times of the preliminaries, while access for the finals is based on the 8 fastest results of the semi-finals. Tied times are possible at any stage of
the competition: swimmers with the same time may share the medals or the position in the final ranking. At the conclusion of the preliminaries, tied times for the 16th place (access to the semi-finals), or in the semi-finals for the 8th place (access to finals) will be decided through a swim-off between the concerned swimmers – the best of the swim-off will then compete, depending on the case, in the semi-final or in the final.
